A Brazilian appeals court Wednesday upheld ex-president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's conviction for corruption, dealing a body blow to his hopes of running for re-election this year. The three-judge panel sitting in the southern city of Porto Alegre unanimously ruled that his original 9.5-year jail sentence be extended to more than 12 years. Lula was defiant, telling he intends to run for the presidency despite the court setback.

Curitiba - O ex-presidente Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva pediu à também ex-presidente Dilma Rousseff que tenha forças para "resistir atacando e não se defendendo" em carta pelo seu aniversário. No documento, postado pela própria Dilma em seu perfil no Twitter, Lula afirmou que está preparado para enfrentar o futuro ministro da Justiça e Segurança Pública, Sérgio Moro, e sua condenação. Dilma completou, na sexta-feira, 71 anos.

"Querida Dilma, estou te escrevendo para te dar parabéns por mais um aniversário, que você tenha forças para resistir atacando e não se defendendo", destacou Lula, em carta publicada hoje pela própria ex-presidente. Afirmou ainda que não vai trocar a sua "dignidade pela sua liberdade".
